Southwark runs the London Marathon

Charles Medhurst (76) running his last Marathon this year, has been a
member of Christ Church,
Greenwich, all his life. Charles (above) was baptised
there. He was a pupil at Christ Church School and a choir boy. He married Iris
there 52 years ago and has been Sunday school teacher, Scout leader,
churchwarden and treasurer. In 1988 at the age of 62 Charles who had never run
further than the end of the road decided to run the marathon for church funds.
He has now completed 14 raising £35,000 - for Christ Church Forum, 'Fight
for Sight' and several small charities. |

Phil Wicks (above), just 18, finished his first ever Marathon in an
impressive time of just 3 hours 24 minutes. Phil, an A level student at Glyn
School, is a Communion Steward at Christ Church with St Philip, Worcester Park
He said the atmosphere and encouragement of the crowds helped him keep going.
He was raising money for the Meningitis Research Foundation. Phil suffered from
the illness as a young child and hopes to raise over £1,200.

The Ven. Christine Hardman, Archdeacon of Lewisham, finished the
course in 4hrs 53 minutes despite a damaged knee and back muscle spasms needing
physio. Her husband, Roger, (4hrs 23 mins) finished 'with a smile on his face'.
Not only did he beat wife Christine who led him in two years ago - but he was
overtaken by TV Groundforce's, Charlie Dimmock just before the finish!

Colin Morton, Diocesan Personnel Manager also running with a 'dodgy
leg' finished in 4hrs 41 mins "and 46 secs".
The Rev. Paul Collier St Hugh's
Southwark(3hrs 25 mins), 26 minutes
faster than last year.
Kehinde Lipede (also from St Hugh's
Southwark) finished in 3hrs
51mins.
Adam Boulter from All Saints
Battersea, who painted the pictures at
St Hugh's, finished in 3hr 57mins.
Canon Stephen Coulson from St Mark's,
Mitcham, who finished in 4hr
31mins said it was "such a good event to be part of".
Andrew Gaitskell, Churchwarden at
Emmanuel, West
Dulwich, was running
his third Marathon, to raise money for Cancer Research UK and a Torchbearers
project in Ghana which he will visit in May. |
