Four Bishops' statement on Zimbabwe

photo

A statement by Southwark's four Bishops was read out by Bishop Colin at the annual service in Southwark Cathedral to celebrate Bernard Mizeki Day on 17 June.

The statement (click here) calls on the Diocese to pray for justice for Zimbabwe, for the sick and hungry, for relief programmes, and for sound political development and "good stewardship of the rich resources of that beautiful and bountiful land".

With the people of Zimbabwe suffering the daily deprivations of a failing economy and political disturbance, prayer and moral support seemed all the more urgent this year as they honoured their martyr and national hero, Bernard Mizeki.

Bishop Colin also read out a message of blessing and encouragement e-mailed by Bishop Sebastian Bakare, the Bishop of Manicaland, after which Zimbabwean ordinand, Charles Chindomu (below) gave an address on Bernard Mizeki's example of faith and courage.

He also praised the people of Southwark for their prayer and support. The service also featured vibrant singing from the choir of Zimbabwe Christian Fellowship (photo above).

As the congregation began to arrive, a few members of the choir slipped effortlessly into rhythmic harmony as a warm up.

By the end of the service they had everyone jigging and smiling as they sang and danced down the nave and out into the churchyard - a surprise evening treat for summer strollers passing by!
