The building was within the present parish of Clapham Common, St Barnabas.

Description

St Matthew's, in Rush Hill Road SW11, was opened in 1877 and served by curates from St Mary's Battersea. When a new parish was created in 1895 it was assumed that St Matthew's would become the parish church, but the Ecclesiastical Commissioners insisted that it was not substantial enough. St Barnabas' was built as a result but St Matthew's continued to be used until 1941. The building was demolished and the site redeveloped in the early 1960s. The London Metropolitan Archives hold various records for the church. St Matthew's communion plate continues in use at St Barnabas'.
