Southwark Diocesan Certificate in Biblical
and Theological Study
In 30 evening sessions (6.30-9.00pm)
September 2008 - July 2009
at
Croydon Parish Church (Wednesdays)
Trinity House (nr London Bridge)
[Wednesdays]
St Leonard's Church, Streatham (Tuesdays)
This course is for thinking Christians
who want to understand their faith better.
It is given mainly by lecture, with
some group work, and four short assignments.
There are ten evening sessions per
term, in three terms between September and June.
You can take more than a year to
complete the certificate by taking different modules in different
years, but you are asked to make a minimum commitment to attend one
complete term at a time.
The cost is £30 per term/£90 for the
year (which may be waived in cases of hardship).
The areas covered are:
- THE BIBLE [14 sessions] What
is the Bible? How did it get put together? What is the background to
its various writings? How true is it? How do we deal with its
difficulties and contradictions? How do we relate the Bible to our
faith and experience today?
- DOCTRINE [6 sessions] What do
I mean when I say the Creed? How does it connect with my daily life
and belief? How do I understand God? How can Jesus be both God and
human? What does it mean to say Christ died for our salvation? What
does it mean to be a person? What is the Trinity all about? What
happens when we die?
- ETHICS [5 sessions] What is
good and what is right, and how do I know? Do you have to be
Christian to be good? How is my Christian faith relevant to some of
today’s moral questions – e.g: sex, marriage and relationships; the
beginning and ending of life; work, money and politics; justice and
peace. How do I go about trying to make moral decisions?
- WORSHIP AND SPIRITUALITY [5
sessions] Where does our church worship come from? What is really
going on in baptism, at the eucharist, the occasional offices? What
do we mean by ‘spirituality’? What resources are there in history
and tradition to help us grow in prayer, devotion and spiritual
maturity?

God-Search: Explorations in Christian
Spirituality
Spirituality involves the search for meaning and direction in life.
From a Christian perspective spirituality has to do with the work of
the Spirit within us, drawing us deeper into the life of God and
leading us to act with God in the world.
The God-Search course is in two parts:
-
The first
explores some key questions and themes within the exploration of
spirituality
-
The second
introduces the writings of some spiritual teachers from the past
and looks at their significance for today.

Pastoral Auxiliary (SPA) Training
SPAs are lay
men and women authorised by the diocese to help develop caring
and pastoral work on behalf of the church. Some SPAs are members
of hospital or prison chaplaincy teams; some represent the church
in caring agencies in the wider community; and many have responsibilities
for developing pastoral projects, policy and practice in their
own parishes.
The SPA Training
Course lasts for two years, beginning each September. The course
includes evening training sessions (held in the London Bridge
area), placement and observation opportunities, small group work
and projects, some Saturday workshops and three residential weekends.
Much of the course is participatory, with discussion, case study
exercises and other group work. The course aims to develop confidence
in pastoral practice, to increase understanding of Christian
responses to people and their needs, and to enable SPAs to reflect
on their faith and action.
The SPA Course
is equally suitable for those whose experience of pastoral care
has been informal and those who have some background in secular
caring agencies. Participants do not need formal academic qualifications,
but do need to be willing to share and learn from their own experiences
of caring. SPAs are assessed on the basis of their participation,
contribution and growth.

Reader Training
Readers are lay
men and women who hold a Bishop's license to minister in local
parishes or chaplaincy teams. Their ministry includes preaching,
teaching, leading worship and exercising pastoral care.
If you feel that
God may be calling you to Reader ministry, the first step is
to talk to your parish priest or chaplain, and come along to
one of the Vocational Guidance Units.
Enquirers are
welcome to join the course at any stage.
The training
course begins in September each year, and lasts for nine terms.
Most of the teaching takes place in Montague Chambers (next door
to the Cathedral) on Thursday evenings, with occasional day conferences
on a Saturday. Trainee Readers also belong to small tutorial
groups which meet once a month in their local area.
The training
covers the following areas :
Biblical Studies Doctrine
Spirituality
The Word and the World Pastoral Care Preaching
Church History & Liturgy Ethics Worship
and aims to offer
trainee Readers a thorough theological, spiritual and practical
grounding for their future ministry.
A certain amount
of written work is required, and trainee Readers are also expected
to gain experience in preaching and leading worship during the
course. Assessment is shared by the course leaders, the trainee's
parish priest, and their PCC or chaplaincy council.

South
East Institute for Theological Education
The South East
Institute for Theological Education is one of 12 regionally based
courses in England training men and women for lay and ordained
ministry in the Church. Formed in 1994 out of a merger of the
Southwark Ordination Course and the Canterbury School of Ministry,
it is sponsored by the Anglican dioceses of Southwark, Rochester
and Canterbury, and by the Methodist and United Reformed Churches.
However, it draws students from all over London and the South
East and seeks to serve the church by providing training in a
changing and challenging environment.
As a part-time
course, SEITE enables students from a wide range of different
social and academic backgrounds to study theology as they continue
to work in their normal occupations. This is one of the greatest
assets of the course and enables everyone - staff and students
alike - to draw on a wealth of experience and insight.
Courses are currently
taught in three centres: on Monday evenings in Chatham; on Tuesday
evenings in Southwark; and on Wednesday evenings in Canterbury.
Because SEITE
operates over such a large area, the Institute is called to reflect
on the needs of the inner city as well as suburban and rural
areas, and to learn from them all. Changing social patterns challenge
students to consider the claims of the Gospel in a multi-faith,
multi-ethnic environment in which indifference is often the norm.
The aim of the
course is to equip students to be reflective practitioners: people
of faith who are rooted in spirituality and the Christian tradition,
but able to draw on this with confidence as a primary resource
for witness and service to the Gospel.
SEITE is an associate
institution of the University of Kent, and offers two year part-time
courses leading to either the UKC Certificate in Theology or
the UKC Diploma in Theology and Ministry. The Certificate programme
aims to introduce students to the academic study of theology,
and the Diploma seeks to develop some of these themes at a more
advanced level.
Courses are open
to three categories of students:
Associates who attend evening classes, and are formally registered
as students with the University of Kent
Ordinands who attend residential courses in addition to the evening
class programme
Auditors who may register for all or part of the course and sit
in on evening classes, but are not registered students of UKC

Vocation
Guidance Unit
Is God Calling
You?
All Christians are given a share in Christ's
continuing ministry in the world and the Church
by virtue of their baptism, but some are called
to a more particular ministry for which training
is usually appropriate. We believe that
Vocational Guidance Units with Vocations
Advisers in each Archdeaconry help people to see
more clearly the most appropriate way forward
for them.
All those who are enquiring about vocation to
any kind of ministry are asked to attend a
Vocational Guidance Unit before any decision is
made about training.
-
Is God calling
you to further service?
-
Do you feel that
what you're doing now could be more effective - if you had more
training?
-
Do you want to
be a more confident Christian?
There are a number
of ways to go:
Church Army - evangelism and social concern
Southwark Pastoral Auxiliaries - lay pastoral ministry
Reader - lay teaching and liturgical ministry
Ordination - priest or deacon
There are many other areas of ministry to which God may be calling
you: for example, counselling, spiritual direction, the religious
life, and ministry at work or in the community.
There is a person near you - your Archdeaconry Vocations Adviser -
whose job it is to help you discern which of these paths you might
follow. Before any decision is reached, you will meet to talk; then
you will be invited to a Vocational Guidance Unit. This will give
you an opportunity to talk and listen to others who also believe
that God is calling them. You will hear some of the things that the
Bible has to say about ministry, and you will be given more details
of the options available in today's Church. Full co-operation with
your parish is important so that your vicar or chaplain will be
informed of your enquiry.

SPIDIR
SPIDIR
website
SPIDIR has run courses in spiritual
direction for the past 25 years. The courses run over two years, the
evening course meeting once a fortnight in term time and the daytime
course meeting for a day a month. The courses are ecumenical and open
to clergy, laity, women and men.
Applicants are required to have some
experience of directing others, though it is recognised that in some
instances this may be very informal and occasional.
SPIDIR bases its work on the premise
that everyone would benefit from having someone to talk to three or
four times a year about their journey to and with God, and about their
deepest values and experiences. Ideally it is best to find someone we
already know or who has been recommended to us, but SPIDIR offers a
service of trying to match a spiritual director or companion to the
kind of request received. For a confidential discussion, contact Katherine
Smith.
